Wild Turkey Tail
Turkey Tail Mushroom (Wild)
General Information
Turkey tail mushrooms are multicolored fungi that grow on tree trunks and fallen trees in wooded areas. They have been used in centuries for treating a variety of health concerns and diseases in Eastern medicine
Turkey tail mushrooms have a number of helpful benefits for the body
This mushroom contains an impressive array of antioxidants, including phenols and flavonoids. These compounds help inhibit or reduce damage caused by oxidative stress. Phenol and flavonoid antioxidants promote immune system health by reducing inflammation and stimulating the release of protective compounds
Applications
Turkey tail is commonly used in tandem with traditional treatments like chemotherapy as a natural way to fight certain cancers. One study revealed that adding Turkey tail mushrooms to a patient’s treatment diet, along with radiation and chemotherapy, helps reduce recidivism rates of gastric, breast, colorectal and lung cancers by boosting overall immune system health and performance during treatment. Another review of more than 10 studies found that patients given 1–3.6 grams of Turkey tail mushroom per day along with conventional treatment had a significant survival advantage. This study also showed that people with cancer treated with Turkey tail and chemotherapy experienced a 9% reduction in five-year mortality compared to chemotherapy alone
The compounds in Turkey tail may also offer benefits for gut health. This mushroom contains fiber, which is an indigestible part of plant foods that helps maintain healthy digestion. Also, it keeps gut microbiome balanced by suppressing harmful bacteria and increasing beneficial bacteria. A healthy colony of bacteria in the gut can help prevent disease and support the immune system
