Garden thyme is a native plant in western Mediterranean region to southern Italy. It is also a widespread type in Asia, especially in Iran

Today, many species of Thyme are being harvested in European countries and Spain is the supreme exporter of thyme oil in the world with trading 90% of it

The main substance of garden thyme is Thymol. This substance is about 25% to 50% of thyme oil

Thymol is a biocide component. This means it can destroy harmful organisms and has antibacterial properties 

Therapeutic Applications

Historically, Thymol has been used as a cure for some diseases such as Ringworm and Hookworm. In Middle East, people still benefit from this substance found in thyme by mixing it with other ingredients to remove internal parasites

There are also evidences of using thyme by people to protect themselves from Black Death
