General Information
Stinging nettle commonly grows in the United States, Canada, and Europe. It gets its name from the sharp hairs on its leaves which contain chemicals which irritate the skin and cause stinging, itching, and redness. Nettle has been used since ancient civilizations. For example, the Ancient Egyptians are known to have used its infusions to treat arthritis. Nettles were also used by Roman soldiers as whips which induce an inflammatory reaction, relaxing tired muscles and aching joints.
Content
Nettles are extremely high in vitamins and minerals, and also contain plenty of protein, fiber, polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, and antioxidants. Dried nettle leaves are 40% protein, making them one of the highest known sources of green protein. The amino acid profile of the nettle also makes it not only higher in protein content, but superior in protein quality. Fresh nettles are a particularly good source of Vitamin C.
