Propolis
Propolis
General Features
Propolis is rarely available in its pure form and it is usually obtained from beehives and contains bee products
To be specific, apart from honey, bees also produce a compound from the sap on needle-leaved trees or evergreens. When they combine the sap with their own discharges and beeswax, they create a sticky, greenish-brown product used as a coating to build their hives which is called propolis
It has a long history of medicinal use, dating back to 350 B.C. and ancient civilizations used propolis for its medicinal properties
Chemical Content
Propolis possesses so many elements and compounds, but the majority of these compounds are forms of polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that fight disease and damage in the body. It also has a special compound called pinocembrin, a flavonoid that acts as an antifungal. These anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make propolis helpful in wound healing. One study found that propolis can help people who have had traumatic burns heal faster by speeding up new healthy cell growth
Therapeutic Application
Propolis is used for canker sores and infections caused by bacteria
It has been suggested to have a role in treating certain cancers as well by keeping cancerous cells from multiplying. It also reduces the likelihood cells which will become cancerous and blocks pathways that keep cancer cells from signaling to each other
Propolis may act in the body to help with allergies by blocking the release of histamines. It lowers blood pressure by decreasing the activity of an enzyme called Tyrosine Hydroxylase that may cause high blood pressure
Propolis boosts bone health and help heal fractures by strengthening bone density
It enhances tooth and oral health and neutralize cavities by killing bacteria and reducing swelling around the gums Propolis speeds up wound healing by promoting skin cell rejuvenation
It also protects the liver from toxins, injury, and disease and help with diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels
